Kids love being creative, covering their skin and tasting art materials. However, some of these products contain harmful toxins that can be absorbed through the skin, breathed in and ingested. Luckily there are heaps of quality non-toxic brands that can be found in Australia. Most of these products are made in Australian, America and Germany and comply with strict safety standards. They can be found in department stores and children’s boutiques, but some may have to be purchased online.
The following art materials and crafts that I have recommended include crayons, pencils, markers, paints, face paint, chalk, play dough, modelling clay and glue and craft activities. I have also recommended some DIY recipes and information on the brands and products (bottom).
Crayons
Most conventional kids crayons are made with paraffin wax which is petroleum-based, as well as artificial, chemical-based colors. Glitter (plastic particles) and perfumes are also sometimes added to kids crayons. These perfumes contain phthalates which are toxic and carcinogen. Other toxins that have been found present in some brands include lead, asbestos, and mercury, which has lead to some recalls and warnings. These non-toxic brands are made from beeswax or soy wax and use natural mineral pigments for colours. So they are safer for little curious mouths.

Pencils
Conventional colored pencils use chemical based pigments and can be coated with toxic varnish. All of these brands state that they are non-toxic and acid-free for young users. However, only Lyra is certified with EN-71 and ACMI. These pencils also have more vibrant pigment than conventional colours, which can be really hard and pale.

Conventional markers contain highly toxic chemical solvents like xylene and are often alcohol-based. These brands are all non-toxic and water-based. They also don’t stain clothing.

Paints
Oil based paint is probably the worse for kids because it contains chemical solvents, such as methyl alcohol and toluene. These chemicals emit dangerous volatile organic compounds or VOCs. Paints can also contain toxic metals such as cadmium, arsenic, and lead. Water-based paints are the best for kids. Most seem to wash out and are considered non-toxic.
We originally purchased Crayola fingerpaint for our daughter, which stated it was non-toxic. However, when I went to purchase more I noticed that it stated on the box that it shouldn’t be used on skin or faces. My daughter loves to cover herself in paint, so wanted to purchase something a bit gentler. It’s best to buy non-toxic water paint but if you have a small bub or a toddler who loves to paint themselves and taste the paint these ones might be a bit safer options. Another brand that is non-toxic and safety tested is Educational Colours Rainbow Colours, which I haven’t listed. Alternatively, you can always make your own paint for finger painting. Face Paint
Face Paint is often loaded with dangerous toxins that are easily absorbed into the skin. They can be made with formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, dioxins, and other petroleum-derived products. A study in 2009 found heavy metals present such as lead, nickel, cobalt, and chromium contaminating the artificial color additives, which were way above safe levels. There are other brands that are made with natural ingredients which are safer and gentler on skin. These products are colored with natural pigments from fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other botanicals.

Modeling clay or Polymer clay is usually made of polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It doesn’t contain any clay minerals and softened with toxic phthalates. None of these brands have really natural ingredients and don’t state that they don’t use artificial colours. Most are gluten free, non-toxic and are the safer brands on the market. Papoose is an Australian company that is focused on fair labour and sustainable practices. They sell handmade products that are made by women in Nepal and designed locally. All dyes used are AZO free, biodegradable and non toxic and comply with EN71 (part 1,2,3). They don’t use synthetic fillings, only the finest wool and natural materials.

DAS Terra Modelling Clay a non-toxic, gluten free malleable modeling clay, that air hardens (24 hours) and has a fine even texture. It can be used with wood, cardboard, terracotta and paints and varnishes can be added for decoration. It’s ideal for making small objects, jewelry, and decorations.
QToys is part of Melbourne-based Quinn’s group. They utilise green practices by making products from plantation rubber, Acacia timber, and recycled timber from coconut trees. Recycled branches from rubber trees and Acacia trees are also used in many designs. Made in Vietnam by craftsmen and craftswomen who are paid a fair wage in stable employment. QToys comply with Australian and New Zealand toy safety standards. Additionally, most Q Toys also have the CE mark which means that they have been tested by qualified testing organizations according to the European safety standards for toys.
