It’s been a little while since my last colouring update. So today I wanted to show you some of my new books, colouring materials and other purchases. These were bought over the past couple of months and I intend on making some reviews of them soon.

 

Until recently I didn’t own any Japanese colouring books. But after seeing Japanese book hauls by Coloring Queen and work of colourists like Chris Cheng, I just had to get some of these amazing books. I purchased these three books from Amazon (US). I did toss up ordering directly from Amazon Japan, YesAsia or CDJapan. However, with Amazon gift cards and postage, it was cheaper for me to buy from Japanese sellers on Amazon, rather than Amazon Global.

I have recently reviewed of Inko Kotoriyama’s Disney Lovely Coloring Lesson Book, which I purchased from Cyber-Life Shop (Amazon). I absolutely love this book for line art, paper quality and the lessons on how to colour the characters. See my review or my gallery of completed coloured pictures.

I also bought the other two books from YS Japan Store (Amazon). The first is Kanoko Egusa’s Menuet De Bonheur, which is an adorable book. It is filled with very detailed drawings of animals, like cats, rabbits, ducks, etc, in both natural settings and dressed up as if they were people. I won’t give too much away as I hope to do a review very soon. If you are curious, see this review by Coloring Queen.

The other book is Makoto Takahashi’s Princess girl Coloring world. I really didn’t know what to expect with this book, as I couldn’t find any flip throughs on Youtube. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I received it. This colouring book line art of Makoto previous works and has a princess theme. The princesses include Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina. Each princess has about three or four pictures each to colour. At the beginning of the book, there are coloured images of the original works, which correspond with most of the pictures. It is quite a thin book but is absoluetely delightful.

The next lot of books were all purchased from a variety of places.

The most recently that just arrived the other day is Johanna Basfords Ivy and the Inky Butterfly. Unlike most people in the colouring community, I did not pre-purchase this book. I have all of Johanna’s book and I still haven’t really explored Magic Jungle. I knew I wouldn’t have a chance to get to it anytime soon. However, after seeing everyone’s amazing work, my wandering eye lead me to purchase this beautiful storybook/colouring book. I decided to go with the US edition rather than the UK after reading this comparison by Lucy on her blog In the Midst of Madness. In Australian stores, only the UK version is being sold and is available everywhere. I plan on starting work on this one very soon.

Jasmine Becket-Griffth’s Coloring Book is the book I’m actually working on at the moment. So that will be my next book review on this blog. I wanted this one for a while after seeing the work of La Artistino. Coincidentally it has a few Halloween pictures and other dark ones that are perfect for this time of year. See my current completed works on Instagram. I bought this one on eBay, which somehow worked into a promotion with some other items.

Colorist Special Effects by Helen Elliston is a wonderful step-by-step guide to tips and tricks for adult colouring books. I think I originally saw a video by the author on Youtube and later purchased it from Amazon. I am constantly using this book as a go to for how to colour different objects and colour charts for all my pencils. I can’t compare with any similar books but I am really happy with this one and it has become quite popular.

Johanna Basford’s 16 Month Weekly Colouring Planner is not a colouring book, rather it is more of a daily planner. It does include a variety of images to colour from Johanna’s colouring book. If I wasn’t going back to Uni next semester I probably wouldn’t have purchased since I am not really keeping many appointments at the moment. However, it is going to the perfect book to keep track of everything once things get a bit busier. Looking forward to colouring this pictures while in transit. I bought it from Book Depository.

I actually found the Time Garden by Daria Song in QBD on sale for $6. Seriously this never happens to me. I rarely find books of this calibre in bookshops and almost never on sale. This book actually wasn’t on my must-buy-immediately list, but I am still happy I bought it. I have seen so many amazing pictures coloured by other that I look forward getting stuck into this one in the future.

These last books were all gifts from my mother-in-law from her recent trip to Japan. How spoilt am I? The brat that I am showed her exactly the kind of books that I was looking for and I couldn’t believe she returned with all these amazing books.

Probably the book I was most excited about was Inko Kotoriyama’s  Adult Disney Love’s gift Lovely painting lesson book (Full of love scenes) (Beauty and the Beast cover). I originally wanted this book but it was so expensive to get to Australia and not available on Amazon US. It is the same format as Disney Lovely Coloring Lesson Book and you can see a great review on Coloring Queen’s website and channel. I’m hoping to get stuck into this book very soon.

Disney Girls Coloring Book is another very pretty Disney themed book, by the publisher Takarajimashiya. The paper quality good but not as thick as Inko’s books. The line art is gorgeous and is also in a variety of styles. What I love about this book is that it includes the villains. The book is split up into chapters as well.

The last two books are One World Disney to Travel Coloring Book (Boutique Mook no.1236) and Disney Coloring to decorate the four seasons (Boutique Mook no.1255). I am not sure how the artist is in for these books. The paper in both are nice and thick and both have really adorable images. The first book has a map of the world and you can colour your way through the world of different Disney characters, including Aladdin, Lion King and Mulan. I love that some of these characters are included as they aren’t in my other Disney themed books. The second book features mostly Mickey Mouse and friends and depicts them in scenes from Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. There are lots of wonderful Christmas scenes that I look forward to colouring in the coming months.

The last purchases are just some extra colouring materials and stationary. The Alice in Wonderland stationary holder, White Rabbit bookmark and Touch Nice Watercolor Markers are all from Wish. I love this cheap online variety store. Although the items on this site often look better online and are a bit disappointing when they arrive, these items were as expected. I haven’t tried the pens yet, I will have to see if how they fair on double-sided books. I also ended up buying another Prismacolor Premier Sharpener since my Derwent Super Point Mini Manual Sharpener is not idea for my Prismacolor pencils. Octavia broke my last one and I am really happy with how it’s working. The lilac metal container I bought from Japanese variety store Daiso. It was also so cheap and great to carry my pencils when I am in the middle of a project. The only thing I have to be careful of is not breaking the pencils cores by nicking them on the holes.

 

Wow, this is a lot longer post then I thought it would be. I can’t believe how much my little collection has grown in this short time and still more books coming for Christmas. Looking forward to bring you all some new book reviews and completed pictures as quick as I can colour them.
